The Business Tourism Network Releases its 2015 Statistics Report

The Business Tourism Network Releases its 2015 Statistics Report

October 28, 2016
The Quebec Association of Convention Professionals (QACP) analyses the statistics from events and conventions held in member destinations annually. With an economic contribution of more than $143.3 million by its clientele, the 2015 fiscal year reflects the ongoing growth that has been seen since 2006. This important economic activity reaffirms that the business tourism and convention sector contributes significantly to the economy of Quebec's regions!

As noted by Mr. Steeve Gagné, President of the QACP and manager of the Statistics Committee with the QACP: "With a total of 2,218 conventions or events, 2015 stands out with its increase in 14% in the number of activities in the QACP network, in comparison with 2014. This means that each day, on average six (6) events in business tourism are taking place in one of our member destinations. Each one generates 207 overnight stays over a three day period, on average. This represents a regional economic contribution of $64,624 per activity on average."

"The members of the QACP cover 17 of the 22 tourist regions in Quebec and clearly represent the most active players in this business sector. For many, business tourism represents more than 60% of their revenue. Our association covers almost all of Quebec's territory, and the positive analysis we have presented, along with this significant injection of capital in regional economies, is very reflective of both our and their hard work!" added Mr. Gagné.

For 2015, the following destinations supplied their data: Alma-Lac-St-Jean, Beauce, Bécancour, Bromont, Carleton-sur-Mer, Charlevoix, Drummondville, Gatineau-Outaouais, Granby, Magdalen Islands, Lanaudière, Laurentides, Laval, Lévis, Longueuil, Maskinongé, Matane, Memphrémagog, Nicolet-Yamaska, Québec, Rimouski, Rivière-du-Loup, Saguenay, Saint-Hyacinthe, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Shawinigan, Sherbrooke, Suroît, Tremblant, Trois-Rivières and Victoriaville. The calculation of tourism spending is based on the concept of the "overnight stay". This is equivalent to the rental of a room for a night in addition to associated spending to meet the needs of this market segment. This can include meals, coffee breaks, room rentals, audiovisual material, etc. For the last fiscal year, the average spending for the whole network is $302/night.

The QACP has compiled statistics for events and conventions of 50 overnights stays or more in its member regions since 1996. This data is, without a doubt, the most important source of information about business tourism in Quebec. This market intelligence is possible thanks to the collaboration of its members. The term "convention" covers conferences and conventions, business meetings and training sessions, while the term "event" includes sports competitions, exhibitions, salons, festivals, etc. It should be noted for the regions of Laval, Gatineau and Quebec City that the spending parameters were adjusted upwards to better describe the economic reality of these urban zones.

This is a sector that is continually transforming from within, and as such, companies must be able to follow the evolution of their clientele over longer cycles. Indeed, convention organisers are used to moving their activities from one region to another. "The competition between the different industry players is very fierce, and each year we see new infrastructure contributing to the increase in the overall offer. Yet the intra-Quebec market is not unlimited, and we have noted behavioural changes in our clients. More specifically, think about the growth of smaller meetings. We have to admit that it is very difficult to obtain a truly exhaustive portrait of the business tourism market in Quebec, as it has many facets, and is constantly evolving. As a Sectoral Tourism Association (STA), the QACP works hard to collect the maximum amount of information about the sector by ensuring that its database has solid yet very conservative indicators," affirmed Mrs. Ginette Bardou, General Director of the organisation.

The QACP brings together more than 125 qualified organisations and actors who have extensive knowledge about the convention market in their respective regions. These business tourism professionals are the lead advisors with whom planners find, for free, the support they need to organise events. By using the strength of the QACP network, you can visit all the regions of Quebec and ensure the success of your event!
